I've been reading some of the journal I kept while I waited for E, and came across an entry from the day I bought this little fellow in an antique shop in Florida. He's only about 2 inches tall, and I had no idea who he was at the time, but I couldn't stop looking at him and his gentle smile -- so I bought him. He's still one of my favorite little treasures. It turns out this is Shou Lao, the god of longevity. He's usually depicted with an enormous high bald head and a long wispy beard. He always carries a long knotted staff with a pumpkin gourd attached. In the gourd is the water of life. In his other hand, he holds the peach of immortality.

He's neat. If I'd found him in an antique shop, I'd have snatched him up too.
