I'm on a quest for more locally grown/made foods and goods, so on Saturday morning, I told the girls we were going to wander around to places in town we haven't been before. First, we went to Sweet Celebrations -- a local bakery. This used to be the home of a local institution -- Kay's Ice Cream -- and when it went up for sale a year or so ago, a local person bought it and turned it into a bakery. He left the giant ice cream cone as a tribute. We went there for coffee and a danish and to see what kind of homemade bread they had. Then we ventured off to a relatively new local produce market. We have a farmer's market that's open from May to November, and one of the founders of the farmer's market has created a permanent market where they sell fish flown in from the coast, plus local pasture-fed beef and chicken, eggs, milk and more. We bought fresh eggs, chicken and milk.
The girls, who usually grumble about running errands, had a great time exploring, and I felt good spending money to help small businesses. It was a nice morning all around.

What a great idea. I wish we had more locally owned places in our small town. Unfortunately the few things we do have are chains of some sort or another.
ReplyDeleteI love what that sign says, very creative.
