We made a trip to the library today, and it occurred to me that our book selections said a lot about where we are at the moment.H always brings home a bunch of these letter books. She's loving learning to read -- especially the sounding-out part.
This year, E was struck by MLK's story in ways she hasn't been before -- she's more aware and curious. She told me she liked this book because the images, although powerful, are illustrations rather than real photos.
And I chose Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver. One of my goals for this year is to eat better as a family -- to attempt to grow some vegetables for the first time, to put more organic and healthier choices on the table. Not that we don't eat healthy foods now, but we could definitely do better. At any rate, this story of Kingsolver's family's move from the Arizona city life to a farm in Appalachia sounded really inspirational to me. Now, if I can just find time to read ... :)
I did look briefly for early-elementary books about Chinese immigrants in America. I didn't find any, but hope to do more searching on Amazon. If anyone has suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

I have that Barbara Kingsolver book in my cart at Amazon. It looks really good - I read a bunch of the comments there. We had a small garden last year just to test if it would do well and it was fantastic to bring in our own squash, cukes and tomatoes, not to mention helping our budget! I want to double it this year but first find a way to keep the deer out! Once it got going good, they ate quite a bit of it and mowed down our blueberry bushes to the ground!
ReplyDeleteNice reading selections :) I enjoyed the Kingsolver book. I liked the hybrid memoir style, the different family contributions, and it's a great book to pick up/put down/pick up!
